The museum brings the artefacts to life and explains the geological context of the finds. Seeing the team work on finds was great. Outside, you can still see the pits and smell the asphalt that captured so many creatures. The 3D film was enjoyable and explained the geology, timelines and creatures who have been n the LA area in the past. It brought things to life.

This was a real disappointment! They say you can walk the park for free but, after only being there for about 40 minutes I was charged $20 to park my vehicle. Aside from the one active dig site there was nothing to see except some statues, signs and old dig sites littered with trash and buckets. I did not go into the museum because it was after 4pm when uninsured arrived and museum closed at 5pm. While there were maps available for the park they were only in Spanish.

The La Brea Tar Pits Museum is an absolute gem in the heart of Los Angeles. It’s one of those rare places where science, history, and curiosity come together in the most fascinating way. Watching bubbling tar right outside the museum feels surreal - it’s a living window into the Ice Age. Inside, the exhibits are brilliantly designed, bringing prehistoric Los Angeles to life with impressive fossils, life-sized animal reconstructions, and engaging displays that make learning irresistible for visitors of all ages. The museum strikes a perfect balance between education and wonder. You can actually see scientists at work in the fossil lab, sorting and cleaning real bones uncovered just a few steps away. Staff and volunteers are friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do. The outdoor grounds are equally captivating, with active excavation sites and open-air displays that make you feel like part of the discovery process. Whether you’re a local or just visiting LA, this museum is a must-see destination. It manages to make deep time feel vibrantly immediate, and every visit leaves you with a renewed sense of awe for the world’s ancient past and the ongoing exploration happening right now on Wilshire Boulevard.

We got our tickets through Groupon, and we parked across the street, which was $5 cheaper. The museum was beautiful and really interesting — my kids absolutely loved it. We also walked around outside, where you can see the asphalt bubbling and even smell it. It’s a unique urban park and museum where natural asphalt seeps have preserved fossils from the last Ice Age. Millions of fossils have been discovered here, including plants, insects, and a wide range of animals like dire wolves, ground sloths, and mammoths. The dire wolf collection was especially impressive. A great experience overall.

It was amazing to see the fossils and hear about the history. The displays make it easy to picture what the area was like thousands of years ago. It’s a place that’s fascinating to wander through, and worth the visit. We booked the tickets online but the queue to get in was short. Easily reached using public transport (bus).

Stay safe and secure
Pay attention to the uneven ground around the park and pits. Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes to avoid trips and falls, especially on warm days when the tar can soften.
Stay hydrated, especially during warmer months. Bring a water bottle and refill it at available fountains to avoid heat exhaustion while exploring the outdoor exhibits.
Be aware of your surroundings and keep valuables secure. While the area is generally safe, petty theft can occur in touristy areas. Keep bags zipped and avoid displaying expensive items.
Note the location of first aid stations and emergency contact information. Familiarize yourself with the museum's layout upon arrival in case of any medical issues or emergencies.
If visiting during peak hours, be aware of crowds and maintain a safe distance from others, especially near the observation areas of the tar pits to prevent accidental jostling.
Pro traveler secrets
Check the museum's website for special events or demonstrations. They often have paleontologists giving talks or showcasing ongoing research projects that can enhance your visit.
Plan your visit to coincide with cooler parts of the day. Exploring the outdoor pits can be tiring in the midday sun, so aim for early morning or late afternoon for a more pleasant experience.
Take advantage of the free outdoor park area, even if you don't go inside the museum. You can still see many of the tar pits and fossil displays without paying admission.
Allocate at least 2-3 hours to fully explore both the museum and the surrounding park. There's more to see than you might initially think, and rushing through will diminish the experience.
Consider taking the Metro to the La Brea Tar Pits to avoid parking hassles, since parking can be challenging and expensive in that area of Los Angeles, especially on weekends.
