Visiting the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures feels like stepping into an encyclopedia of cinema. The building itself, designed by legendary Italian architect Renzo Piano, is stunning - particularly the glass-sphere “dome” that houses the Dolby Family Terrace. If you go close to sunset, the view of the Hollywood Hills is truly memorable. Inside, the museum is spacious, modern, and thoughtfully laid out. What impressed me most was how immersive the exhibits are: iconic props, costumes, and behind-the-scenes artifacts are paired with interactive displays and detailed storytelling. The “Stories of Cinema” galleries are especially well done. They don’t just showcase film history - they dive into the craft, personalities, and innovations that shaped different eras. Fans of classic films, contemporary blockbusters, or global cinema will all find something that speaks to them. The Oscar Experience is a fun little extra. It’s cheesy in the best possible way - you step onto a stage, hear your name announced, and “receive” your award. It’s a guilty-pleasure moment that almost everyone seems to enjoy. Too bad Los Angeles is no longer the capital of Cinema nowadays, as the industry has moved elsewhere due to the high costs and taxation here in California.

I loved this museum! My husband and I are big movie buffs and enjoyed reading about the history of movies. We especially liked the Jaws exhibit. I was told we could get through the exhibit in a couple of hours, but we were there from 10:30- closing. We visited on a Sunday and even though it was busy, it wasn’t overcrowded. Get there early so you have time to see all the exhibits and especially if you want to watch one of the movies being shown. If you are really into movies, I recommend a trip to this museum.

The place had a nice atmosphere, and the staff was friendly and very knowledgeable. They approached us as needed, and even though it was busy, buying tickets was quick and easy. It’s also great that admission is free for people under 17, and they offer student discounts. Overall, it was a really nice experience. I enjoyed the Jaws and Barbie exhibits. The displays were super cool and detailed! Plus, there are lots of other museums nearby that people can visit, which makes it a great area to explore.

This is an excellently put together museum. They had the 50th anniversary exhibition of Jaws and that was fantastic. As with most of the exhibits it not only tells the story of the movie but how the different components that go into making the film. Lots of original items. $25 entry fee was definitely value for money as went spent 4hrs walking around seeing everything, including the view from the roof. My only criticism was some of the exhibit layouts wasn't linear. You could go multiple routes. This might be useful when it's busy, but on the Monday lunchtime we went it wasn't busy and just meant checking you hadn't missed anything. The opportunity to take a photo on a reproduction of the Godfather office set was a nice touch as was the photo opportunities walking the Oscar carpet Godfather office and the arm on the amity beach.

We were told that this was a great museum to visit and it certainly lived up to that reputation. You get to see how sound is such an important aspect of film amongst others senses. You can sit in The Godfather chair. At the end dont miss out on seeing a Toy Story roundabout. No need to buy tickets in advance we just bought them on the door. There are many more things to see including lots of Oscars. But too many things to mention.
